“Such as I am, I am a precious gift.” ― Zora Neale Hurston
In Lucille’s Garden, Lily, a bubbly caterpillar, encounters a predator that has a devastating effect on Lily’s life, setting her on a journey to find the unique beauty within herself. This book was created to help children who have survived abuse and trauma to process, heal, and become the heroes of their own stories. It also provides a good entry point for conversation about predatory behavior and the importance of seeking help.
Lucyll Barber-Freeman grew up surrounded by church, music, and teachers. That experience has shaped her view on the importance of education, the impact a book can have on a child’s life, the transformative and healing power of music, and God’s ever-present hand in it all. She received her bachelor’s in English and minor in music from Huston-Tillotson University and her master’s in counseling from Prairie View A&M University. Her grandmother, Lucille, used to say, “God blessed me with a flower bed,” referring to the diversity among her children. This phrase helped set the foundation for this book, as well as form Lucyll’s perspective of seeing the unique beauty in everyone.
This child's story embodies the concept of what trauma can do to the psyche in a metaphoric and non-threatening manner. It can stimulate conversation about abuse in a language that young minds can understand, and adults can explain. Congratulations on this insightful masterpiece!

This book is amazing! I believe it will not only help children, but it will help adults who’ve been through this situation. It is definitely a conversation starter. It’s a great way to let our children know it’s okay to express and speak up for yourself
